A new measure of poverty

If a child has enough to eat, but no access to medical care, is he poor? A group of researchers wants to change the way poverty is measured around the world. Currently, it's measured in monetary income, but that is that really the point? Or is it about whether basic needs have been met?  Read the Chronicle of Higher Education article. See More

88% of online Americans have used the internet in the past year for help in coping with the recession and understanding it

I found this article on the Pew website and thought it was interesting that people are using the internet for their own personal information to look for strategies in coping with the recession and processing what is happening. In terms of Extension resources, I'm wondering if people are using our sites.http://www.pewinternet.org/Press-Releases/2009/The-Internet-and-the-Recession.aspxSee More

Children in Poverty and Bankruptcy increases

Over the weekend I read a couple of newspaper stories that point out that even if we begin to see positives in the economy, there are still many families that will cope with the effects of the recession for a long time. The first story was about a government report indicating more children are living in poverty and what the factors are that are contributing to this. I will look for the link and post it as I find it. The second story had a more localized view of increasing numbers of…See More

The struggle of middle-class families

A recent study (see attached file) found that experiences of economic pressure were associated with an inability to afford both basic needs and some modest but highly valued "extras." This would seem to imply that although middle class families may still be able to meet their family's basic needs (food, shelter, safety, health care, etc) they are struggling to adjust to a lower "standard of living" where they cannot afford the luxuries and extras that they have grown accustomed to. How does…See More

I also have 7 brothers and sisters, and since last year - one brother has had to layoff a large portion of his staff, as his clients are unable to pay their invoices; one of my sisters, her husband, and my own husband were all laid off (including…
